Background of the Study
Subsistence farming is not only an economic activity but also a significant determinant of physical fitness in rural communities. In Ife Central, the daily physical labor associated with farming activities contributes to cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, and overall fitness (Ogunbiyi, 2023). This study explores the impact of subsistence farming on physical fitness levels, investigating the physiological benefits and potential risks associated with this lifestyle. Through field observations, fitness assessments, and health surveys, the research evaluates how regular physical exertion in farming influences physical well-being compared to sedentary lifestyles (Ajani, 2024). The study also considers factors such as nutritional intake, seasonal workload variations, and socio-economic status (Fadeyi, 2025). By quantifying physical fitness parameters among subsistence farmers, the investigation seeks to offer insights into how traditional farming practices promote health and mitigate lifestyle-related diseases.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized physical benefits of subsistence farming, there is limited research quantifying its impact on physical fitness levels in Ife Central. The absence of empirical data on fitness parameters among farmers hinders the formulation of health policies aimed at promoting active lifestyles (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study addresses the gap by systematically evaluating the physical fitness of individuals engaged in subsistence farming and comparing the findings with non-farming populations (Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess physical fitness levels among subsistence farmers.

  2. To compare the fitness levels with those of non-farmers.

  3. To explore the potential health benefits associated with farming activities.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of physical fitness among subsistence farmers in Ife Central?

  2. How do these fitness levels compare with non-farming populations?

  3. What specific farming activities contribute most to physical fitness?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Subsistence farming significantly enhances physical fitness.

  2. Farmers exhibit higher levels of endurance and strength compared to non-farmers.

  3. Daily farming activities positively correlate with improved cardiovascular health.

Significance of the Study
This study provides evidence on the health benefits of subsistence farming, promoting the adoption of active lifestyles in rural communities. The findings will inform local health policies and support interventions aimed at reducing lifestyle-related illnesses (Olayemi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the impact of subsistence farming on physical fitness levels in Ife Central Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Subsistence Farming: Farming primarily for self-consumption rather than commercial sale.

  • Physical Fitness: A state of health and well-being that allows individuals to perform physical activities.

  • Cardiovascular Endurance: The efficiency of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system in delivering oxygen during sustained physical activity.
